India’s passenger vehicle market started FY2027 on a strong note, with several automakers posting record monthly sales in April 2026. The month saw a healthy mix of SUVs, hatchbacks, sedans, and MPVs dominate the charts, while compact SUVs continued their rapid rise in popularity. Maruti Suzuki retained its market leadership with multiple models in the top 25 list, while Tata, Hyundai, Mahindra, Kia, and Toyota also recorded strong performances.
Leading the sales charts was the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, which emerged as India’s best-selling car for April 2026 with 23,580 units sold, registering a 39% year-on-year growth. Tata Punch continued its stellar run by securing second place with over 19,000 units, while the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga reinforced its dominance in the MPV category.

Maruti Suzuki Dzire once again proved that sedans still have a strong demand in India. With nearly 24,000 units sold, the Dzire outperformed every SUV in the market. Its strong fuel efficiency, fleet demand, and extensive service network continue to make it a preferred choice among both private and commercial buyers.

Maruti Suzuki placed 11 models in the top 25 list, showcasing unmatched dominance across segments. From entry-level hatchbacks like Alto and Wagon R to SUVs like Fronx and Grand Vitara, the brand continues to lead nearly every mainstream category. The company also recorded its highest-ever monthly domestic sales during April 2026.

Despite remaining India’s top-selling midsize SUV, the Hyundai Creta saw a 10% decline in sales. Increasing competition from newer SUVs appears to be impacting Creta’s momentum. Hyundai has also started offering discounts of ~Rs.1 Lakh to sustain volumes.

Kia India delivered an impressive performance with both Seltos and Sonet crossing the 10,000-unit mark. The Seltos recorded a massive 72% YoY growth, while Sonet grew 31%, reflecting improved traction in the compact and midsize SUV segments.
