In this February 2025 Tata car sales analysis, we’ll look at the car sales of Tata for the previous month. Lastly, the table with monthly sales for the last 6 months will give you an idea about the 6-month sales trend of all Tata cars.
Stealth Edition or Hypocrisy? Either Way, We Didn’t See It Coming!
Tata Motors have pretty much forced all other carmakers to get on the ‘black’ wagon. Until a couple of years ago or so, Maruti Suzuki didn’t have black a colour option available in their portfolio except for the Ciaz. Only the Ciaz got black colour as the Indian govt. use it for ferrying top officials around including cabinet ministers. While black colour cars are difficult to spot in the dark and increase the risk of an accident, this was never a problem for the government’s fleet of Ciaz as they usually moved in a convoy with beacons flashing red, white and blue.
They also showcased their matte black cars at the 2025 Mobility Expo in the ‘Stealth’ corner of their pavilion. Of all the carmakers, Tata Motors should know better and avoid matte black exterior paintjob as they are most difficult to spot in dark. After all, they are the flag bearers of road safety in India. Black was bad enough. Matte black will be worse. So much worse, that they are advertising it as a feature. They are difficult to see in the dark and that is conveyed clearly in their name: Stealth Edition.
Such a move from any other brand would be acceptable if not ethical. But since Tata claim to prioritize safety and have moved the Indian auto industry towards offering black color, we consider it our duty to highlight the concern before it becomes an epidemic. Because we believe road safety to be much more than a crash test rating. Ideally, safety features that prevent accidents in the first place should be prioritized over any crash safety standard.
If you value safety enough to spend a little more on a car with higher safety standards, we hope you will put enough thought into choosing an exterior color, which also helps prevent accidents. So that you never have to find out how your 5-star car performs in a crash.
Oh, and by the way, Tata Motors share price is also taking a beating. After falling for 7 months straight and losing almost 50% of the market cap, it seems like the March month will bring some relief. On March 3rd, Tata’s share price hit a low of 606.3, which is almost where it was back in Jan 2015. From its recent low, it has moved almost 13% higher. Only time will tell if it’s a dead cat bounce or a real reversal.
It’s also worth noting that Tata Motors are not alone in this correction as the entire auto sector is feeling the heat lately. But Tata took a greater beating as it also appeared to be inflated the most and had moved the most during the covid rally euphoria. In this correction, Mahindra lost only about 22% from recent high to low.
