India’s electric passenger vehicle market witnessed a slight slowdown in April 2026 after a strong March performance. Total EV dispatches stood at 22,878 units, down 7.4% month-on-month from 24,716 units in March 2026. Despite the monthly dip, the segment continues to show healthy momentum as more automakers expand their EV portfolios and consumers gradually shift toward electric mobility.

April 2026 highlighted how India’s EV market is becoming increasingly SUV-driven. Compact and midsize electric SUVs such as Punch EV, Nexon EV, XEV 9e, and Windsor EV dominated volumes, while premium EVs also started finding stronger acceptance. Tata Motors remains the undisputed EV leader, but Mahindra’s aggressive electric SUV push is rapidly reshaping the competitive landscape. MG continues to perform strongly thanks to Windsor EV, while Maruti Suzuki’s eVitara has made a promising debut.
The coming months could become even more competitive as brands like Kia, Hyundai, Toyota, and Renault prepare new electric launches for the Indian market.
