India’s passenger vehicle market is undergoing a structural transformation, with CNG emerging as a dominant alternative fuel. In FY2026, CNG-powered cars crossed the 10 lakh units milestone, accounting for nearly 22% of total PV sales, overtaking diesel for the second consecutive year.

Against this backdrop, a model-wise analysis reveals how strongly the segment is driven by a few high-volume nameplates—primarily from Maruti Suzuki, with notable contributions from Tata and Hyundai.

The Indian car market recorded ~47 lakh unit sales in FY2026, of which ~10.14 lakh units were CNG vehicles. The key growth drivers are Low running cost advantage vs petrol, expanding CNG infrastructure (600+ cities), strong OEM push with factory-fitted CNG options, and increasing adoption in both personal and fleet segments.

  • Maruti Suzuki Ertiga sold 1,45,480 units with 14.3% contribution. It continues to dominate the CNG space, driven by its strong appeal in both private and fleet segments. Its practicality, 7-seater configuration, and low operating cost make it the preferred choice for high-usage buyers.

  • With sales of 1,35,330 units, Dzire’s dominance is powered by taxi and fleet demand, where CNG economics play a decisive role. Its consistent ranking highlights the resilience of compact sedans in commercial use.

  • Ertiga + Dzire together contribute ~27.6% of total CNG sales. It indicates strong fleet and utility-driven demand.

  • Maruti Suzuki Wagon R sold 96,381 units. A long-time CNG staple, Wagon R thrives on affordability, practicality, and high fuel efficiency—making it a top choice for city buyers.

  • Tata’s dual-cylinder CNG technology has enabled Nexon to emerge as a serious competitor in the segment, and it ranked fifth in the list.

  • Tata Punch followed at sixth rank and continues to attract first-time buyers, with CNG variants enhancing its affordability proposition.

  • A striking takeaway from the dataset is the overwhelming dominance of Maruti Suzuki:

    • 16 out of the top 26 models from Maruti’s stable

    • Majority share across segments (hatchback, sedan, MPV, SUV)

  • Top 3 Models = ~37% of Total Sales

The market is heavily concentrated, with Ertiga, Dzire, and Wagon R leading.

CNG’s Strategic Inflection Point

FY2026 marks a defining year for CNG cars in India:

  • ~10 lakh+ units sold

  • Second-largest fuel type after petrol

  • Stronger than diesel in relevance

While EVs dominate headlines, CNG is quietly driving mass adoption of alternative fuels—thanks to its immediate cost advantage and practicality.

Going forward:

  • Expansion of CNG infrastructure

  • More SUV offerings

  • OEM diversification beyond Maruti

…will determine whether CNG sustains its momentum or gradually cedes ground to electrification.
