India’s sedan market may no longer command the volumes it once did, but April 2026 sales figures show that the segment is far from dead. In fact, select models continue to deliver strong numbers despite the overwhelming dominance of SUVs. The latest sales data reveals a market increasingly concentrated around a few key players, with the compact sedan category doing most of the heavy lifting.

At the top of the chart sits the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, which once again proved why it remains India’s undisputed sedan king. The Dzire posted sales of 23,580 units in April 2026, up from 16,996 units during the same period last year, registering an impressive 38.7 percent year-on-year growth. More importantly, the Dzire alone accounted for a massive 67 percent of the total sedan segment volumes, underlining its unmatched dominance in the category.
-
In second place was the Hyundai Aura with 4,587 units sold. The Aura witnessed a modest 8.6 percent YoY growth compared to April 2025.
-
Honda sold 2,856 units of the Amaze in April 2026, marking a strong 41.5 percent growth over last year.
-
However, beyond the top three, the story changes dramatically. Most midsize sedans witnessed declining demand as buyers increasingly migrate toward similarly priced SUVs.
-
Volkswagen Virtus recorded 1,162 units, down 27.6 percent year-on-year. Despite being one of the most enthusiast-friendly sedans currently on sale, the Virtus continues to face pressure from SUV alternatives in the ₹15-20 lakh segment.
-
Tata Tigor dropped by 25.8 percent with 962 units sold. The Hyundai Verna also declined by 13.9 percent to 865 units, while the Skoda Slavia saw volumes fall by 20.8 percent to 830 units.
-
Toyota Camry remained steady with 199 units sold, witnessing only a slight 4.3 percent dip. The Camry continues to cater to a niche premium audience looking for comfort-focused hybrid mobility.
-
Honda City suffered one of the sharpest declines in the segment. Sales fell 56.4 percent year-on-year to just 177 units. Once considered the benchmark midsize sedan in India, the City is now facing intense pressure from changing market dynamics and shrinking sedan demand.
