Performance-Based Insights
Top 3 Performers (May 2024 Sales)
-
Swift (19,393): While the new Swift managed to score top points with a high dispatch figure, the ground reality is different. We had our team members visit various dealerships as walk-in customers and our interaction with the sales team led us to one conclusion: the demand is far weaker than anticipated. All the sales guys we spoke to agreed that the higher price is affecting Swift’s demand. All of them still had the old Swift still in stock and were willing to give discounts. But the discounts varied from one dealer to another; possibly because of the varying number of old stock with the dealership.
-
Dzire (16,061): The Dzire continues to maintain a healthy demand. According to our ground survey, the stock pile up is less significant and not bothersome. The Dzire also isn’t yet carrying big discounts. While some stock is readily available with most dealers we met, if you want a specific engine-transmission-variant-colour combination, then you will have to wait for 2-3 weeks. The Swift, though, is available in all variants and colours at all dealerships our team visited.
-
WagonR (14,492): The WagonR is getting good discounts, and that, perhaps, is helping them move some stock and maintain high production numbers. We didn’t get to speak with the dealers about the WagonR as our team members presented themselves as potential Swift/Dzire buyers.
Top 3 Gainers (YoY % Change)
Where we have nothing to say, we won’t say something just for the sake of it. So, here are the top 3 YoY gainers of May 2024 in the Maruti portfolio:
-
Dzire (+41.94%)
-
Ertiga (+31.96%)
-
Fronx (+28.57%)
Top 3 Losers (YoY % Change)
-
Ignis (-53.77%): A >50% drop in Ignis production may come across a shocker as it is one of the first cars to capitalize on the ‘small SUV’ body style. But it’s likely that this is to avoid piling up stock with the dealerships. According to the Nexa dealerships we spoke with, the Ignis is pretty much readily available across all Nexa outlets.
-
Baleno (-31.45%): According to some sales representatives, many Baleno buyers are choosing the Fronx for its styling and SUV stance. Instead of complaining about the fact that the Fronx is essentially a souped-up Baleno, they’re reportedly glad that it’s a Baleno and that they’re not taking a risk with a new name plate.
-
Ciaz (-26.41%): Given the high margins on SUV-ish cars, Maruti Suzuki probably don’t even have a replacement for the Ciaz in the pipeline. We should expect the Ciaz to fade into nothingness in the next few months.
Top 3 Gainers (MoM % Change)
-
Swift (+373.69%)
-
Gr. Vitara (+27.25%)
-
Ignis (+9.87%)
Top 3 Losers (MoM % Change)
-
WagonR (-18.81%)
-
Brezza (-17.10%)
-
Ciaz (-15.80%)
Since MoM change doesn’t mean much, we’ll leave it without any comments.
Body-Type Based
YoY, Maruti Suzuki’s SUVs continue to gain ground aggressively at the cost of hatchbacks. No wonder the Alto doesn’t show up in the top 10 cars in the recent months. It’s not very profitable. So, Maruti Suzuki priced it a bit too high. The high price of the Alto leads consumers to either jump to a more expensive car or pay up and buy the Alto. Either way, Maruti Suzuki win.
The sedans in Maruti Suzuki’s portfolio also showed some progress because of some help from the Dzire.
