Dzire Stands Tall with Over 57% Market Share
At the top of the leaderboard sits the Dzire, clocking an impressive 2,29,130 units in FY2026, up 38.8% YoY. With a commanding 57.4% segment share, the Dzire continues to be the backbone of the sedan category in India. Its dominance is not just about volume—it also recorded the highest absolute growth among all sedans, reinforcing its unmatched appeal among fleet operators and private buyers alike.
Hyundai Aura & Honda Amaze Complete the Podium
In second place, the Hyundai Aura from Hyundai Motor India delivered 68,066 units, growing 23.9% YoY and capturing 17.1% market share. The Honda Amaze from Honda Cars India secured third position with 32,906 units, maintaining stability with a marginal 0.6% growth and 8.2% share. Together, these top three models control a massive 82.7% of the total sedan market, highlighting a highly concentrated segment.
VW Virtus & Skoda Slavia Hold Steady
Among mid-size sedans, the Volkswagen Virtus from Volkswagen India posted 22,959 units, growing 7.1% YoY, while the Skoda Slavia from Skoda Auto India saw a slight decline of -7.7% with 14,382 units. These models continue to cater to enthusiasts and premium sedan buyers, though volumes remain modest compared to compact sedans.
Sharp Declines for Verna, City & Tigor
FY2026 also witnessed significant declines among established nameplates:
-
Hyundai Verna: 9,925 units, down -36.3%
-
Honda City: 7,142 units, down -34.5%
-
Tata Tigor: 12,147 units, down -26.4%
The drop indicates shifting consumer preferences, possibly towards SUVs or newer sedan alternatives with stronger value propositions.
Toyota Camry Shows Strong Momentum
At the premium end, the Toyota Camry from Toyota Kirloskar Motor stood out with 26.5% YoY growth, albeit on a smaller base of 2,346 units. Its performance reflects growing acceptance of hybrid technology in India.
FY2026 reaffirmed that while the sedan segment may not be the fastest-growing category in India, it remains highly relevant—especially in the compact space. The Maruti Suzuki Dzire continues to be the undisputed king, while competitors struggle to match its scale.
Going forward, the segment’s growth will likely depend on new launches, hybrid adoption, and value-driven offerings, especially as consumer preferences continue evolving.
