Performance-Based Insights
Top 3 Performers (September 2024 Sales)
-
Ertiga (17,411)
-
Swift (16,241): With the help of some discounts, the Swift’s dispatches are keeping pace with the production capacity. Just like the Fronx, Maruti Suzuki hoped for a runaway success with the new-generation Swift but despite its legacy, the buyers aren’t oblivious to the fact that it’s overpriced. If it had strong pillars to stand on, it would have had no trouble selling in good numbers with ZERO discounts as the Brezza did during its initial period.
-
Brezza (15,322): Speaking of Brezza, it continues to maintain a stronghold in the B2 SUV space and maintains the top spot.
Top 3 Gainers (YoY % Change)
Here are the top 3 YoY gainers of September 2024 in the Maruti portfolio:
-
Ertiga (+28.93%)
-
Ignis (+22.28%): The Ignis is probably breathing its last breaths as Maruti Suzuki don’t seem to have a replacement for this mini SUV in the pipeline. Perhaps, we can expect to see the Hustler petrol/EV replace the Ignis sometime in 2025.
-
Fronx (+21.12%): While the Brezza may be the top player among the B2-segment SUVs, the Fronx is what brings in the cash as it carries a far smaller tax component and still manages to appear overpriced. For what it offers — different front + rear styling and a higher ground clearance — over the Baleno, the Fronx indeed carries quite a premium. ~Rs. 90,000 (ex-showroom) price premium is a bit too much for the additional features of the Fronx over the Baleno, which is also carrying higher discounts than the Fronx. It is a success story like no other to come out of Maruti’s portfolio since the last pandemic.
Top 3 Losers (YoY % Change)
-
Jimny (-77.40%): The discounts have (partially) receded and so have the volumes. It’s back to the 3-figure range. Perhaps Maruti Suzuki wanted to see what kind of demand they can generate with the aggressive offers. Or perhaps, they wanted to bring in whatever sales they can before the Roxx hits the showrooms. Either way, the Jimny Zeta manual, even with its 4WD, looks expensive next to the Thar Roxx’ starting price of Rs. 13.0 lakh (ex-showroom).
-
Ciaz (-55.60%): With no replacement in sight and sharply declining sales, this one will probably survive for another year before Maruti Suzuki put the Ciaz to rest and exit the mid-size sedan segment for good.
-
S-Presso (33.28%): Just like the Jimny, Ciaz and Ignis, the Spresso is another car, which makes sense on paper but the sales figures don’t match up to those justifications.
Top 3 Gainers (MoM % Change)
-
XL6 (+20.16%)
-
Swift (+26.45%)
-
Baleno (+14.47%)
Top 3 Losers (MoM % Change)
-
Brezza (-20.16%)
-
WagonR (-18.91%)
-
S-Presso (-18.74%)
Since MoM change doesn’t mean much, we’ll leave it without any comments.
Body-Type Based
YoY, Maruti Suzuki’s sedan and hatchback sales are down. But guess what’s up? The MPVs. Even the Maruti SUVs witnessed a drop in their sales in September 2024 compared to a year ago.
The Dzire also lost some 20% YoY in September 2024 but that’s probably because it’s up for a generation update.
