Tesla has made its India luxury EV play sharper by introducing the 2026 Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive at an introductory price of ₹50.89 lakh ex-showroom. This is a major repositioning because the Model Y is no longer sitting deep inside the ₹60 lakh-plus imported EV bracket; it now directly overlaps with entry-luxury electric SUVs from BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Tesla’s official India configurator lists the Model Y Premium RWD at ₹50,89,000, while the larger Model Y L Premium AWD is priced at ₹61.99 lakh.
What Has Changed?
Tesla’s biggest India move is the lower entry price for the Model Y. With the new Premium RWD variant at ₹50.89 lakh, Tesla has cut the starting point by nearly ₹9 lakh compared to the earlier range. This makes the Model Y a much closer rival to luxury EVs like the BMW iX1, instead of being positioned only against higher-priced Mercedes and other imported EVs. The variant offers a claimed 500 km WLTP range, 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, and 175 kW fast charging support. Deliveries are expected from July 2026.
Why This Is Important For India’s Luxury EV Market
Tesla’s earlier India pricing kept the Model Y on the expensive side, mainly because it is an imported EV. With the new ₹50.89 lakh price point, Tesla has brought the Model Y much closer to established luxury EV options in India.
It now sits almost in the same price band as the BMW iX1 LWB, while Mercedes-Benz EVs like the EQA and EQB continue to be positioned at a higher level. So, Tesla is not relying only on its brand image anymore. It is now trying to attract buyers who may otherwise consider BMW or Mercedes-Benz electric SUVs in the premium EV space.

Tesla’s lower Model Y price is a clear India correction. It now competes more directly with BMW and Mercedes EVs, especially in the ₹50 lakh–₹70 lakh space. The product looks strong on range, technology and brand appeal, but Tesla still has to build trust around service, charging and ownership support in India.
